Texan-n-Tennessee
Welcome to Bolivar, TN
A former co-worker and currently my best friend in the whole-wide-world by the name of Jonathan, told me that X-Box was looking for volunteers to test their new X-Box Live Gold idea. From what I recall, I had an original X-Box and figured that there was no chance in hell I would be selected; so I threw my name in the hat. To make a long story as long as my intro, I was SELECTED! Once they gave me the good news, they told me to choose a Gamer Tag. Since Houston had lost the Oilers and the name for the new team seemed like a good idea, I picked the name "Texan". In November of 2015, I was laid-off during the Oil and Gas dip and had to go all of the way to the outskirts of Memphis, TN to find my next employer. From crowded freeways, jogging trails and killings every night I ended up in a town of approximately 2,000 people that has no freeways (only highways), no joggers and killings are VERY rare.
The former Courthouse.
The former Courthouse was actually a Court House. It was burned intentionally by Union soldiers following the defeat of the Confederate soldiers in Bolivar. They were allowed to remove all of the records beforehand and are still located in the Historical District. A number of the wealthy home owners were forced to provide shelter for the officers for the duration of their stay there. Many of the men that owned the large plantations were off fighting and the slaves tasked with caretaking the property remained to take care of the women and children. There were exceptions however.
The John Houston Bills Estate.
John Houston Bills traveled here to Tennessee with someone you might have heard of, Sam Houston. He actually changed his name to honor our namesake from the Bayou City. This was one of the exceptions. John Bills was one of the plantation owners who remained behind. Before renovations began recently, the Historical District conducted tours of his estate as well as the other large properties.
Hardeman County Courthouse Square.
This time of year, we have live entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings. In the evenings, temperature may go into the 50's but generally mid 60's.
Courthouse Square at Night
As mentioned above, the evening concerts are not only entertaining but the venue is still small town.
